WHAT DOES A CERTIFIED PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN I DO?
Healthcare workers are taking greater rolls in phlebotomy. Phlebotomy is a word that comes from the Greek language. “Phleb” meaning vein, and “tomy” meaning cut into. The responsibilities of a Phlebotomist is primarily draw blood and collect specimens to be used for different kinds of medical laboratory testing, transfusions, research, or blood donations.
The Phlebotomists typically do the following:
- Draw blood from patients or blood donors
- Prior to drawing blood, interact and comfort patients or blood donors to help them feel less nervous
- Verify a patient’s or donor’s information in order to ensure proper labeling of the tubes
- Carefully identify and Label the sample of drawn blood for proper testing or processing
- Enter patient information into facility database
- Handle needles, test tubes, and all instruments properly
- Keep work areas and instruments clean and sanitary to avoid infection
